Sam Register is the new head of Warner Bros. Animation and Digital. Could more DC Comics live-action TV properties follow?
Ordinarily, industry news like this is met with a collective yawn around here, but in this case, we'll make an exception. Sam Register has been promoted to both the head of Warner Bros. Animation and their recently formed Warner Digital Series arm. Mr. Register's resume' should be quite interesting to DC Comics fans, having worked extensively on DC animated series from Justice League Unlimited to Young Justice to various DC Nation animated shorts, not to mention feature length DC animated films like Batman: The Dark Knight Returns and Batman: Under the Red Hood.
“Sam has done an outstanding job shepherding Warner Bros. Animation over the past six years, reinvigorating one of the most storied and accomplished animation production companies in this industry,” Peter Roth, Warner Bros. CCO said (via Deadline). “His creative instincts coupled with boundless enthusiasm, passion and energy were all key drivers in WBA’s recent successes, and I know that he will bring the same level of leadership and commitment to his new mission of building and expanding our digital series business. The possibilities under his guidance are limitless.”
Indeed they are. With his official title as President of Warner Bros. Animation and Warner Digital Series, Mr. Register will be in charge of producing original live-action content in addition to animation for digital outlets. This is a man who has had his hands in any number of DC Comics small screen properties in recent years. Could this be the first step towards original DC Entertainment live-action content for streaming providers, similar to the shows that Marvel will be producing with Netflix? It's worth considering, especially as more and more of Warner Bros. DC-related projects seem to be focused more on television than the big screen.
