Kevin Smith says that Batman v. Superman: Dawn of Justice and the Justice League movie aren't following the traditional model.

Kevin Smith is notoriously chatty, and has been even more so about the production of Batman v. Superman: Dawn of Justice. Recently, Mr. Smith has displayed some insider knowledge of everything from the suit that Ben Affleck wears to the different versions of the Batmobile that we'll see in the movie. But this time, he's talking about the shape of the entire franchise over on the Hollywood Babble-on podcast.

“They’re obviously beginning something...and so this is the beginning of the Justice League, as we all suspected as they were announcing that cast. We were like, ‘This is the beginning of a Justice League movie.’ From what I understand now, it’s no longer like, ‘This is Superman 2.’ They’re not doing these things. They’re doing like, ‘Here’s Man of Steel. Here’s Batman v. Superman: Dawn of Justice.’ The next one is not like a sequel to one of the characters. They’re just going to keep building their universe for about five or six movies. But all of them…it’s supposed to tell one massive story, which is all Justice League oriented,”

Assuming that he's right, of course, Smith's comments are revealing. It pretty much seems to scuttle the idea that Warner Bros. is going to follow anything resembling the Marvel model as far as introducing characters in standalone films. While Justice League is unquestionably the next film on WB's schedule after Batman v. Superman: Dawn of Justice, we have to wonder what else they'd be building to in the next three films.

Batman v. Superman: Dawn of Justice hits theaters on May 6th, 2016.

Kevin Smith must be really out of job opportunities, and/or he still loves Ben Afleck.

Dudes got a man crush on Affleck. Have you seen Jay and Silent Bob?

I dig the format of the universe. Lets see if it works.

"...seems to scuttle the idea that Warner Bros. is going to follow anything resembling the Marvel model as far as introducing characters in standalone films." - Eh!? That sounds exactly like what they are doing. Kevin Smith has said that the next one is not like a sequel to Batman or Superman, that they're going to keep building the universe for 5 or 6 movies (um.. how many members?), and that it's all Justice League oriented (i.e. 'leading to'). Meanwhile Greg Silverman from WB has only said "BVS will lead into Justice League" which has been hyped up as meaning "Justice League is their next movie".

So they're doing multiple movies with one of the characters being the main focus, but having all the characters involved. Basically when people complain about where Iron Man was in The Winter Soldier and why Thor didn't help in IM3, DC isn't going to have that. Every character will have a part in every movie. Basically making a Justice League series of films. Sweet.

My humble opinion, DC/Snyder should take learnings from Xmen FC/DOFP, since they are 'serious' enough and really good movies versus TDKR and Man of Steel that made most of critics/fans a bittersweet taste. Beyond die fans to evaluate the movies according to their accuracy to the comics, i'd prefer an excellent movie from acting and script point of view.

Great in theory, but the beauty of the Marvel model is that these characters get actual development time in their own movies.

Agreed. It seems that DC are trying to make great movies whereas Marvel are trying to make great superhero movies, if that makes sense. Give me the 'great movie' franchise any day.

I'm just glad we live in a world where we will have these two huge studios producing these movies and so many of our geek dreams are coming true.
It won't last forever so I hope everyone just chills out and enjoys what we get and realize these are amazing cinematic times.

The next movie will be titled 'Batman v Superman v Wonderwoman: Threesome.'
