Meredith and David Finch will be guiding the adventures of Wonder Woman, starting with Wonder Woman #36.

It's time for Wonder Woman to step up and break out. Long known as part of the sacred "trinity" of DC superheroes (the other two being, naturally, Superman and Batman), Wonder Woman hasn't connected with comic readers quite as well as she should in recent years...which is a shame, because the work that Brian Azzarello and Cliff Chiang have done on the New 52 Wonder Womanseries has been terrific. But it's good to shake things up, and that's what's happening with Wonder Woman #36 in November.

Meredith Finch will be the new Wonder Woman writer, with fan favorite artist David Finch on visuals. "We wanted to make her a little more flawed," Mr. Finch told USA Today. "She doesn't always necessarily have the answers."

As for the fact that far more men have written Wonder Woman's adventures than women, Meredith Finch said "it makes sense if you're going to try to attract that female market that you appeal to them on every level — your writing demographic reflects the demographic of your readership."

DC is continuing to position Wonder Woman as the integral part of their strategy that they've always said she is, but they've never quite managed to deliver on. Diana is currently an essential, founding member of the current Justice League, she's in a relationship with Superman, making fairly frequent guest appearances in his title (and co-headlining one), and the soon to be completed Azzarello/Chiang arc really helped define her relationship with her mythological roots. Here's hoping that the Finches can really help break things out.

Thank god. Azarello/Chang have made a decent mythology action story, harsh and violent enough to appeal to a broader audience, but they completely butchered Diana's character and basically threw so many great elements of the WW character out the window. I really hope we get to see more of the complex and awesome Wondy with the really rich world that showed up under the pens of Simone or Rucka.
