Game Of Thrones The Mountain And The Viper

The fifth season of Game of Thrones will be traveling to Spain for a new location shoot. We suspect that Prince Oberyn would approve...

After nearly every Game of Thrones season finale, only two things are definite: the Westerosi graveyards are exceedingly full, and the clean game board allows new characters to be introduced.

Yet, it would appear that Season 5 of Game of Thrones will mean more than new faces—it probably means a new kingdom. As officially announced by HBO on Wednesday, and confirming a month of rumors, the ambitious premium cable epic will be adding a new country to its expansive production schedule and location shoots: Spain.

A portion of Game of Thrones Season 5 will be shot on several natural locations in the Province of Sevilla. This filming, set to take place later this year, is being done in full collaboration with the Andalucía Film Commission through their president, Don Carlos Rosado, the Sevilla Film Office and the mayor of Sevilla, Don Juan Ignacio Zoido, and the Osuna Film Office and the mayoress, Doña Rosario Andújar.

HBO has declined to comment the specifics of the location beyond that or what they will represent, but our more than educated guess leads us to all but confirm this will be the location of Dorne. Besides the overlapping similarities between the seventh—and yet unvisited—kingdom of Westeros and Spain in George R.R. Martin’s source novels, there is the fact that it was heavily hinted at by Pedro Pascal’s Spanish accent in Season 4 when he memorably played the awesomely doomed Red Viper. Also, large chunks of A Feast For Crows (the fourth book in Martin’s “A Song of Ice and Fire”) take place in Dorne, as well.

I think we can all raise a glass to that and the memory of Prince Oberyn Martell.
