Zack Snyder has explained why he opted for Batman in his Man Of Steel follow-up. Plus a new image of Henry Cavill as Superman.

Production is well underway now on Zack Snyder's Man Of Steel follow-up, Batman V Superman: Dawn Of Justice. And he's given a fresh interview to USA Today where he's been chatting about the film.

Firstly, he's focused on Henry Cavill's Superman, arguing that "we've both created this guy, and we can push him around a little bit", adding that Cavill is more comfortable playing the role of the Man Of Steel for a second time.

But why stick Batman in there? "I was in no rush to put Batman in the movie", Snyder said, "but on the other hand it seemed organise the way our story was unfolding to start to feather him in". It's deliberate, too, that we're not seeing a gradually introduced Batman this time around, with Snyder opting to rely on the character's mythology instead of re-establishing him. "It's cooler to see a crusty old Batman beating the snot out of guys", he added.

The most intriguing titbit relates to the title. For a long time, it was believed that the new film would be called Batman Vs Superman. But there was thinking in going with Batman V Superman instead. The reason? "To keep it from being a straight versus movie, even in the most subtle way".

The full interview is here. And Warner Bros has also released a new photo - albeit heavily Photoshopped - of Cavill as Superman. You can see that below. Is that the new Gotham City in the background too?

I wish they would release a picture of both of them standing next to each other in color for christ's sake. If that's Gotham in the backround they nailed it!

Gonna suck, but will make money just like Transformers 4

"A crusty old Batman beating the snot of people." Sold.

You are comparing this to Transformers? Completely invalidates your opinion.

"organise"

They should have given each character another solo movie before doing this movie. The timing for doing this movie at this point in time is all off.

another director so full of themselves that they will ruin the character to reimagine them in the way they want instead of staying true to source material and giving us a good solid movie. #boycott batman v superman. its going to SUK!

it invalidates nothing. its going to b a big showy turd! just like what transformers has become.

dear lord all you fan boys saying this is going to suck.. you will be first in line when the movie comes out to see it!! You can only tell origin stories so many times for these two!!! nothing has changed... planet destroyed... parents dead.. we get it... get to the damn Justice League movie already...

what Transformers has become? when was there ever substance to this franchise? It was always fluff.

Thank you!!!

In other words, the studio told him to put the character in the movie.

Doesn't matter if they are the first in line. You can be a fan of something, know it's going to be not very good, and still want to see it hoping to prove yourself wrong.

Remember when Batman & Robin came out? Yeah same thing is happening with this franchise.

Please remove the automatic 'on swipe' tablet format redirect. The tablet version is atrocious.

In the animated series, yes, I'll give you that it was always fluff and nothing more than a very effective way of selling toys (even if it is still beloved by millions who grew up with it. I love it and can admit that) But the comic book series was as good as any book out there. Simon Furman made it an epic story where every issue was important and played a role in what happened next. (The first couple of years were pretty much just like the cartoon in terms of being fluff, as you say, but once they got their footing, it could hold it's own with Chris Claremont's X-Men stories of the time)

I guess people would rather watch more of Nolan's "Gangster Movies With a Guy Dressed In a Batman Costume" movies. The dude made Batman boring. How do you do that? Oh yeah, get a bland actor to play the character and then take all the comic book like aspects out of a comic book movie so we can try to make it seem realistic. In other words, F-Nolan's Batman, I'm ready to see a badass, gruff, 80's Frank Miller written type Batman on screen again. The last time we saw the REAL Batman on screen was in 1992 with Batman Returns, funnily enough with another actor that all the "fans" complained couldn't do the role who then turned out to be arguably the best portrayal of the character of BATMAN ever (I admit Bale was a better Bruce Wayne, but Keaton was the better Batman but they are two different characters. If people can't understand that, then there is no hope for this relationship to get back on track.)

If someone doesn't know Batman's origin by now, he or she must have been in a coma for the last 20 years. This movie doesn't need to rehash all of that. The X-Men movies get by just fine without taking time to give everyone a back story. There's no reason to think this movie can't work with a dozen heroes without retelling all of their origins.

as long as there isn't any mention of Batman's origin. We all know it already.

Ha exactly- Title of article should be- "Looking to capitalize on the success of the Avengers, Snyder forced to start Justice League franchise"

European spelling, I believe.

In other words the last "REMAKE" of Superman sucked so badly they really needed some help!

That is why they are hyping this up 2 YEARS before its release, look British controlled hollywood please quit ruining our classic movies and come up with your own stuff for a change!

I am with you 100% i am boycotting it! Not to mention I have boycotted the Hobbit after the stunt of making a small simple novel into 3 part movie just to keep racking in the money!

I am proud to say I did not waste a dime on that Smog version! I even refuse to rent the movie or even see it if it ends up being free on Spike.

They have got to learn to quit ripping us off!

~For a long time, it was believed that the new film would be called Batman Vs Superman. But there was thinking in going with Batman V Superman instead. The reason? "To keep it from being a straight versus movie, even in the most subtle way".~

V and Vs mean the exact same thing... they both mean versus...

This movie is going to be amazing!!

In other words your Superman sucked so bad that the studio made you put Batman in the movie to help out. Since there's been no real coherent plan, once bats was in and it's no longer just a Superman movie we might as well throw in some other heroes and this be our introduction to the JL

Henry Cavill is such a great choice for Superman. Too bad pretty much everything else about this movie will suck hard.
