MTV has given a 10-episode order to Shannara, an adaptation of Terry Brooks' bestselling book series.
Fantasy is about to become a reality for millions of fans since MTV has given the greenlight for just not the previously announced pilot, but for a whole season order of Shannara, an adaptation of the Terry Brooks book series.
Set to be executive produced and written by Smallville’s Al Gough and Miles Millar, this is an adaptation of a fantasy world where thousands of years after the destruction of civilization, a single family, the Shannaras, are imbued with an ancient magic that will light a way for the darkening world. It is also set to begin as an adaptation of The Elfstones of Shannara.
The announcement also occurred Friday coupled with the revelation that Jon Favreau, who was previously announced to be directing the pilot, is stepping back to serve as executive producer. However, Jonathan Liebesman of Battle Los Angeles and Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles will be stepping in to direct the pilot and also serve as an executive producer.
The first season has been ordered for 10 episodes.
Brooks, who is also serving as an executive producer on the series, began the Shannara series in 1977 with the publication of The Sword of Shannara, the first part of the original Shannara Trilogy. He has since sold as many as 21 million copies of his books in print. Brooks is currently credited as being the second highest-selling living fantasy author in the world, behind only J.K. Rowling.
