Indie sci-fi director gets the nod to direct the fantasy pilot.
Indie filmmaker Mike Cahill has written and directed two of the more thought-provoking science fiction films of the past few years: 2011's Another Earth and this summer's I Origins. But now he's moving up into the world of corporate television production, with the Hollywood Reporter confirming that he's been hired by SyFy to direct the pilot for the cable network's adaptation of The Magicians.
Lev Grossman's best-selling book (which is followed by two sequels) centers on a young man named Quentin Coldwater who is enrolled into a secret college of magic in upstate New York but learns that being a magician is not all it's cracked up to be. It's a definite stylistic switch for Cahill, who has not directed a fantasy tale before, but it will be interesting to see what he does with the larger resources that will no doubt be at his command. Production starts later this year, which gives you a little time to check out Cahill’s previous work.
