The ex-My Chemical Romance frontman and Umbrella Academy writer makes his Marvel debut with Spider-Man!
Three Cheers For Sweet Spider-Man! Former My Chemical Romance frontman and Eisner Award-winning comic book writer (Umbrella Academy) Gerard Way will be making his Marvel Comics debut with Edge of Spider-Verse #5!
Spider-Verse #5 will be the final instalment of Edge of Spider-Verse mini-series that showcases the different Spider-Men and Spider-Women that exist in some of Marvel’s many different continuities, universes, and alternate realities. Way, who recently completed recording a solo album after the disbanding of My Chemical Romance, teams with artist Jake Wyatt to put a futuristic, sci-fi spin on Spidey.
In an interview with Marvel.com, Way lays out the many drastic liberties he was able to take with this unique opportunity to tell a different Spider-Man tale than fans are used to. “Our Spider-Man is a spider-girl,” Way says. “In a futurist city fairly different from the New York we are familiar with, our version of Spider-Man takes the shape of a government project: SP//dr. SP//dr is comprised of three vital components: a pilot, a machine, and a radioactive sentient spider acting as one half of the brain that makes it all work. Peni Parker is a young girl, who, left parentless, is adopted by her Aunt May and Uncle Ben, the two heads of the SP//dr project. When they realize Peni is the only one who can successfully pair with SP//dr, they make the unorthodox decision to train her as SP//dr's newest pilot.”
The Pacific Rim-esque idea surely sounds like a creative approach, and Wyatt’s artwork, which can be seen below, reinforces that.

Edge of Spider-Verse #5, the concluding book of the mini-series, will be released October 15.
