Things looked pretty dire for Lucy Lawless' Agent Hartley character at the end of that first episode. Then again, they looked pretty bad for nearly everyone involved. It's clear that after a sanitized first season, Agents of SHIELD wants to establish right off the bat that there are higher stakes.
The Hollywood Reporterasked Ms. Lawless if there's a chance she could return. “Absolutely,” she responded. “It's whatever the writers want to write. All things are possible in SHIELD. That's what I love in this sci-fi comic world. There are no absolutes. There are no bottom lines. Every boundary is bendable.”
In other words...of course she's going to return. You don't get genre goddess Lucy Lawless on your season premiere only to kill her off five minutes before episode's end. And then why would they have gone through the trouble of having her come into contact with that 084 and its gruesome consequences? Yes, this sounds like a safe bet...
