On the heels of Injustice: Gods Among Us, DC's announced that the next Netherrealm fighting game is getting the same comic treatment.

One thing DC Comics has been on top of lately is video game tie-in comics. Whether good or bad, they’ve made sure to put a comic out there for virtually all of their video games. The Arkhamstuff, Scribblenauts, Infinite Crisis, and especially Injustice: Gods Among Us. This is an interesting contrast to Marvel, who used to do comics for games like Hulk: Ultimate Destruction and Rise of the Imperfects, but has since eased off. That made it especially frustrating that they never did anything with the Marvel vs. Capcom games, otherwise known as a license to print money.

Then again, Marvel doesn't own Capcom and would only be holding onto the license temporarily, so it’s understandable. Warner Bros. happens to not only own DC, but Netherrealm Studios, as well. Netherrealm gave us Injustice: Gods Among Us and in a few months, they’ll be releasing Mortal Kombat X. If the Injusticecomic worked, why not try it again?

Starting in January, we’ll be getting a digital comic series based on Mortal Kombat X. It will be written by newcomer scribe Shawn Kittelsen and drawn by Dexter Soy. Ivan Reis will be taking care of the covers. We have two of them down below, featuring Sub-Zero and Scorpion, which wrap into each other.

The game’s story takes place after the events of 2011’s Mortal Kombat, where a time travel incident caused the original three games to move in a different direction. While the specifics of Mortal Kombat X’s story have yet to be revealed, we do know that the story will span 25 years. Kittelsen will be writing the prequel, but will have access to a metric buttload of Mortal Kombat heroes and villains when spinning his tale. Being that it’s a story about an alternate timeline, that means that there are dozens upon dozens of warriors who won’t show up in the game, yet are still out there doing stuff. So maybe we’ll see what Moloch and Drahmin are up to while all of this is going down.

I mean...yeah. The post-Trilogycharacters aren’t the most exciting crew, so I don’t imagine everyone’s into it, but maybe Kittelsen can surprise us with some cool comics about Darrius or something. Either way, we're going to get a good look at much of the new cast, including finding out what the deal is with that badass Kotal Kahn.

This isn’t the first time we’ve seen Mortal Kombat get its own comic book. Back in the 90s, Malibu held onto the franchise for a bit and gave us a bunch of mediocre miniseries with a gem or two hidden in there. We’ve also seen a handful of comic prequel one-shots to various games. With Mortal Kombat Xbeing under the same umbrella as DC Comics, it’ll be interesting to see how stable this run can get. Who knows? Perhaps we’ll see these guys appear in DC proper one day.
