There will be lots more of Gotham City without Batman, as Fox has given the series a full 22 episode order.
I'll confess, this one is a bit of a mixed bag. While I'm not Gotham's biggest fan (you can read my reviews right here), I haven't been one of the more vocal haters of the show, either. The news that Gotham has been picked up for a full 22 episode season at least means that it won't suffer the same fate as the previous genre series that occupied the 8 pm timeslot (we miss you Almost Human).
In that regard, it's good that Gothamis given a real shot. But the problem then becomes this: that's a lot of potential filler in a season that, a mere three episodes in, already seems prone to filler episodes. Gothamis a procedural with a twist, and this means we're more likely to see some of those insufferable procedural filler episodes by midseason. This isn't good.
If Gothamwere set for a cable style short season, something that Fox has shown they aren't opposed to with shows like The Following and 24, it would avoid spinning its wheels with garbage episodes and it wouldn't have to work quite as hard to justify existence as "the Batman show that doesn't feature Batman." Now, well...they'd better knock it out of the park.
In short: Good for Gotham. Here's hoping they can prove me wrong.
