The long-whispered big DC event has a name, a villain, and a creative team. But is Convergence the end of the New 52?

DC have been building to something massive with their weekly series The New 52: Futures End and Earth-2: World's End over the last few months. What that exactly is has been anyone's guess, but we've got a clearer picture of it now...and it's called Convergence.

Convergenceis a weekly eight issue limited series from the creative team of writer Jeff King (Continuum, Stargate SG-1, White Collar) and  the art team of Carlo Pagulayan and Stephen Segovia. Convergencewill also span 80 (!!!) comics (as 40, 2-part stories) in April. The villain of the piece is Telos, but the bigger baddie is Brainiac, who has been popping up quite a bit in the DCU lately (particularly in the pages of Futures End), which makes us wonder if that chatter about him being the big baddie of Batman v. Superman and the Justice League movie might just be true.

Once again, DC is leaning on their Multiverse concept to showcase non-52 (is that a word?) versions of their characters. Brainiac, it would appear, has taken his "city in a bottle/world in a bottle" concept a little further this time, only this time, with entire realities.

From a practical standpoint, we know (thanks in no small part to Bleeding Cool who initially broke the story), that this event will also help ease the schedule as the final move of the DC Entertainment offices from New York City to Burbank takes place. In all likelihood, we are still not seeing another DC reboot. Convergence is mostly a way for DC to assure fans that their favorite versions of particular characters are still out there in the Multiverse, alive and well, even if the main DC continuity is only interested in showing you the New 52 at the moment.

But it's also been whispered that there's yet another event that will spin out of this. Traditionally, September is DC's big event month. So are there additional repercussions from Convergenceto be found in September of 2015? Time will tell. But (there's a lot of "buts" in this article), with all of these realities converging, we have to figure that a few things will merge here and there, and this will be used as a way to iron out some of the issues in the current New 52 continuity.
