Marvel's Daredevil Netflix TV series will have a markedly different tone than the rest of the Marvel Universe...
Agents of SHIELD is much improved in season two, but it's still very much a network TV show. With Marvel's Daredevilseries getting ready to launch on Netflix in mid-2015, the natural question is: how will the Marvel Universe translate to a forum that is unrestricted by network guidelines or the MPAA? Showrunner Steven DeKnight has been chatting about some of these concerns:
“When I came onto this there was no way I wanted to make this hard-R or NC-17...I don’t think the material warrants that. It is a little grittier and edgier than Marvel has gone before, but we’re not looking to push it to extreme graphic violence, gratuitous nudity or anything like that. The story does not require that and I think would suffer if you pushed it that far.”
While I would be perfectly happy if the word "gritty" was never uttered again in connection with anything connected to comic books or superheroes, nothing here sounds unreasonable. Daredevilis a street-level story, and it's tough to tell one about a guy who solves problems with his fists (as opposed to powers or technology) without getting into the more violent end of things.
Meanwhile, Jeph Loeb says that the show is as much the story of Vincent D'Onofrio's Kingpin as it is Matthew Cox's Daredevil. "We tell the story of how he met his wife Vanessa and how they fell in love — our antagonist actually has a love story," Loeb said. "That’s the love story you’re following, the one you’re invested in, and seeing how that affects him and changes him. I think Vincent just brings such depth to it, his performance is just astounding.”
Meanwhile, Mr. DeKnight won't rule out the possibility that we'll meet Bullseye this season, but it doesn't sound like much of a priority, warning "if you try to jam in too many characters, it just becomes a mess."
We expect Daredevilwill arrive in May or June.
