Update: Due to the increased demand for seeing Game of Thrones in IMAX--a first for any television series--HBO and IMAX announced Wednesday that they are extending Westeros' stay on the country's biggest screens. Instead of simply playing for the weekend of Jan. 30th, Game of Thrones will begin its IMAX conquest on the 29th of Jan. at 10pm for a sneak peak. It will then continue screening in movie houses until the following week on Feb. 5th.

This is big news for Westerosi fans who will soon be able to see the Hound and Brienne do battle in theaters. Because, yes, IMAX has also announced that the episodes to air will be the ninth and tenth hours of season four, including "The Watchers on the Wall" and "The Children." The ninth episode in particular should look great on a big screen, as it was directed by filmmaker Neal Marshall (The Descent, Dog Soldiers) and features the largest scale battle ever attempted on a TV series.

Original article: Winter is here. But for Game of Thrones fans, it might feel like a glorious springtime, because the HBO flagship is about to become the first television series ever screened in IMAX.

HBO made the announcement that at the end of this month two episodes from Game of Thrones season four and a then previously unseen season five trailer will be making its debut on the biggest screens in the country. While the two episodes that will be released in the format have yet to be disclosed, the dates are already posted as Jan. 23rd to Jan. 29th.

“The cinematic brilliance and grand scope of the series is perfect for the IMAX format,” said Pamela Levine, HBO’s chief marketing officer. “We are always looking to provide fans with new and exciting ways to experience the show, and viewing two key episodes, along with the new trailer, on such an impressive platform makes for a great event.”

It’s certainly a good series for IMAX to try a new medium showcase on. Besides being uncommonly cinematic in its storytelling approach, Game of Thrones holds the notable honor of being the most talked about show of 2014 on Facebook, and the more dubious accolade of being the most illegally downloaded. There is an audience.

If we had to guess which two episodes will air, the final two make somewhat the most sense. “Watchers on the Wall” is perhaps the most cinematic episode in the whole Game of Thrones canon to date, and “The Children” made for a bitterly enjoyable finale with vengeance wrought upon Tywin. However, “The Mountain and the Viper” may also be considered as seeing Oberyn Martell’s awesomeness on IMAX would be magnificent—as would its end.

The actual episodes will be revealed on imax.com later this month.
