Sophie Turner Connects Game of Thrones & X-Men: Apocalypse, Hints at Dark Phoenix

From the Lady of Winterfell to the most powerful mutant in the cosmos, Sophie Turner is currently enjoying the opportunity of playing two separate visages of geek royalty. Of course, Sansa Stark of Game of Thrones and Jean Grey of X-Men: Apocalypse are very different characters that hail from different places of geekdom, right? You may want to think again, according to Ms. Turner.

While chatting with IGN, the young actress compared the similar feelings of alienation and unknowable power. She may have also inadvertently let slip that there is a fiery future in store for her version of Jean Grey. After all, just because X-Men: Apocalypse is the last of the “First Class Trilogy” does not mean the story is over, and Bryan Singer likely has his own very unique ideas about where the Phoenix Saga could go besides that lousy X-Men: The Last Stand ending.

“I think maybe one of the reasons that they chose me for [Jean] is because they saw the dark side of Sansa,” Turner said. “Maybe they’re thinking, ‘Oh, Phoenix, Jean Grey.’ I definitely see a lot of parallels in there…[Jean] struggles with her power…and not being accepted in the human world. I think in terms of [Game of Thrones] that’s kind of the way Sansa felt in that she really wanted to be a normal princess/queen and live a normal life—and she doesn’t, because all of this havoc happens. I think Jean, in a way, feels that.”

If this is not a hint of a Dark Phoenix rising in the future, then I have a Lannister arranged marriage bargain to make with you.

Turner also talked about the legacy of Famke Janssen in the role.

Says Turner, “I think Famke played Jean incredibly well, but also, I’m playing a younger version of her. I want to emulate Famke in a sense, because she has to seem like the Jean in the first two movies, but I’m also going to put my own twist on her; I think I’m also going to take inspiration from the comics.”

X-Men: Apocalypse picks up with our period piece jumping mutants in 1983 when a new malevolent force of ancient power named Apocalypse (Oscar Isaac) is released. Charles Xavier (James McAvoy), Magneto (Michael Fassbender), Mystique (Jennifer Lawrence), Wolverine (Hugh Jackman), and Beast must join forces when faced with this onslaught. They will also be accmpoanied by a young cast of heroes that includes Scott Summers (Tye Sheridan), Jean Grey (Sophie Turner), and Ororo Munroe (Alexandra Shipp). It opens May 27, 2016.
