New DC pilot Lucifer casts Tom Ellis as the man with the horns.

News

The new DC Comics series being developed by Fox, Lucifer, has found its title character. Tom Ellis will play the devil in the pilot, which will be directed by Len Wiseman and executive produced by Jerry Bruckheimer. Based on the characters created by Neil Gaiman, Sam Kieth and Mike Dringenberg for both the Sandman books and his own spinoff, the series follows the King of Hell as he departs his fiery kingdom and heads for the mellower confines of Los Angeles, where he finds a new gig assising the LAPD in nabbing crimimals.

The British-born Ellis is largely unknown outside his native country, where he has appeared on a slew of TV shows including EastEnders, Doctor Who and Merlin. He did star in the USA Network medical drama Rush last year, but that only lasted 10 episodes.

We’ll see if he has better luck with Lucifer. If Fox likes the pilot and picks up the series, it could well face the same challenges faced by the struggling Constantine: viewers seem to love DC-based series based around superheroes, but not so much the supernatural ones.
