Caitriona Balfe has been cast in the much coveted role of Claire Randall in Starz and Ronald D. Moore's new literary adaptation of fantasy series Outlander!

Starz’s new fantasy series Outlander has finally found the last point to the central triangle. Meet Caitriona Balfe, the new face of Diana Gabaldon’s Claire Randall.

Created by Gabaldon in 1991, Claire is the central figure of a seven book series when, as a fiercely independent and intelligent World War II era nurse, she is sent back in time by supernatural forces to the time of Jacobite Scotland.

Says Gabaldon herself in a Starz press release, “Hard to believe lightning can strike twice, but it surely did. The moment Caitriona Balfe came on screen, I sat up straight and said, ‘There she is!’ She and Sam Heughan absolutely lit up the screen with fireworks.”

The book series, at least in its beginnings, chronicles the adventures of Claire Randall, a World War II-era nurse, returning to Scotland with her husband (Tobias Menzies) for a “second honeymoon” after the war. Inadvertently, she happens to discover a Pagan ritual that time warps her back into Scottish history circa 1743, just in time to witness the beginning of the Jacobite Rebellion. A 20th century nurse in a time of barbarism, war and romance with a certain Jamie of Clan MacKenzie (Heughan)? It is easy to see why Starz and Ronald D. Moore (Battlestar Galactica, Star Trek: Deep Space Nine) signed off on that.

Balfe will next appear in The Escape Planwith Arnold Schwarzenegger and Sylvester Stallone. Outlanderbegins production this month in Scotland.
