Drax the Destroyer, a comic character played in the movies by a former wrestler, will be written by a former wrestler. Huh.

At C2E2 it was announced that CM Punk (or Phil Brooks if you’re nasty) will be writing a new ongoing series for Drax the Destroyer. Not bad for a guy whose only comic-writing track record is doing backup stories in the recent Thor Annual and Strange Sports Stories #1.

Ever since leaving the WWE last year, Punk’s been about walking two paths: writing comics and doing MMA. From the looks of this Ed McGuinness cover, it looks like this series will be mixing his passions.

Oh God, is that a Skrull Colt Cabana in the front row?!

No word on whether or not McGuinness will be the artist for the series.

This is a rather fascinating announcement due to Punk’s history. For those who don’t follow wrestling, Punk felt a bit underappreciated behind the scenes. He worked his ass off full-time while celebrity names like the Rock and Brock Lesnar were allowed to come in, get marquee matches, bigger paychecks, and lighter schedules.

Word is that he was penciled in to main event WrestleMania XXX until former main eventer Batista came back after a four year hiatus. Vince McMahon, in his infinite wisdom, decided that Batista would immediately be shoved into the top spot as the company’s main hero, even though everyone else (including Punk, Batista himself, and all the fans) thought this was a bad idea.

Batista’s return match was at the Royal Rumble 2014, which he won...and was booed relentlessly for it. The same win also solidified him in the main event of WrestleMania 30, meaning Punk main-eventing was no longer in the cards. That Royal Rumble turned out to be Punk’s last match, as the next night he chose to walk out on the company.

Now CM Punk is using his celebrity status to get his own ongoing comic series about a character famously portrayed by Batista. We live in a strange world.

CM Punk’s Drax the Destroyer series will start in winter of this year, making it ten years since the first comic to star Drax. Keith Giffen and Mitchell Breitweiser’s Drax the Destroyer miniseries from 2005 was the first step towards the bold, new direction in Marvel’s cosmic scene that led to Guardians of the Galaxy existing and earning it’s immense popularity.

Gavin Jasper hopes there’s an issue where Drax fights a giant alien beast made out of basketballs. Follow Gavin on Twitter!
