New concept art from X-Men: Apocalypse reveals Charles Xavier in his wheelchair (and with hair!), plus Archangel and some alien technology.

As X-Men: Apocalypse gears up to begin principal photography next month, Bryan Singer may not have as much time left to patiently dole out snippets of information about his latest mutant epic. Perhaps that is why instead of going to Twitter or Instagram, this week we have a batch of new concept images released by the X-Men: Apocalypse director via Empire.

In the latest bevy of images, we can clearly see Charles Xavier (James McAvoy) and who I predict to be Moira McTaggert (Rose Byrne), and one other in front of some rather alien technology. I will assume it has something to do with Apocalypse, much like the Egyptian concept design in the third image. We even have more of a look at how Archangel’s wings will operate in the new film and a more colorful, assumedly ‘80s styled version of Cerebro.

Singer promises to Empire that X-Men: Apocalypse will be different. Using the word “mythic” to describe the type of ancient evil the new villain (Oscar Isaac) brings to the mythology. And Simon Kinberg, who co-wrote the film and is serving as producer, also promised that the newly recast Cyclops, Jean Grey, and Storm—now played by Tye Sheridan, Sophie Turner, and Alexandra Shippe, respectively—will be as prominently featured in the film as the original “First Class” cast of McAvoy, Michael Fassbender, Jennifer Lawrence, and Nicholas Hoult.

“Scott is not yet the squeaky-clean leader,” Kinberg said. “Storm is a troubled character who is going down the wrong path in life. And Jean is complex, interesting, and not fully mature. It’s fun to see someone struggling with their powers when you know one day they’ll become the most powerful person in the world.”

X-Men: Apocalypse picks up with our period piece jumping mutants in 1983 when a new malevolent force of ancient power named Apocalypse (Oscar Isaac) is released. Charles Xavier (James McAvoy), Magneto (Michael Fassbender), Mystique (Jennifer Lawrence), and Beast (Nicholas Hoult) must join forces when faced with this onslaught. They will also be accmpoanied by a young cast of heroes that includes Scott Summers (Tye Sheridan), Jean Grey (Sophie Turner), and Ororo Munroe (Alexandra Shipp). It opens May 27, 2016. In the meantime, read X-Men: Apocalypse: Everything to Know.
