Brian Michael Bendis has given an enthusiastic endorsement of the Jessica Jones Netflix series.

News

Brian Michael Bendis has never really been a man of few words. I know how he feels. He does speak his mind, though, and as co-creator of Jessica Jones, the star of the next Marvel Netflix series.

That being said, Jessica Jones isn't your typical Marvel page-to-screen story. There's no costume, no name recognition outside of more hardcore comic fandom circles, and even the title of the series, Jessica Jones, doesn't exactly call to mind the big costumed action Marvel is usually known for. The comic, on the other hand, was known as Alias, but because of the relatively recent TV series of the same name, that isn't happening here.

By the way, the often out of print Aliascomic by Mr. Bendis and Michael Gaydos is now finally available on ComiXology, and you should absolutely read the entire thing immediately because it's amazing.

Anyway, back to the story at hand. Mr. Bendis often answers fan questions on his Tumblr, and when he was asked about his feelings on Jessica Jones, well...he had plenty to say. As usual. I've reproduced some of it here in all of its bloggy glory:

The show is so good. I have seen the first couple of episodes and because i didn’t work on it directly i can say this with full no ego fanfare: i loved it!!

and believe me, i was going to be the hardest on it.  harder than any of you.

jessica is a part of my DNA. A bad jessica jones show would have hurt me deeply.

BUT it is faithful and lively and everything that I could personally have wanted from the show.  the mean streets of marvel netflix from a different perspective than matt’s but at the same time… it all fits.  just like the comics on their best day. and just like Netflix DD, the look of the show is cracklin’ noir but with its own palette.

As for the casting of Krysten Ritter as the title character, Bendis described her as "soooo good." He also offered high praise for Michael Colter as Luke Cage, saying that the casting "is as strong and as spot on as the casting of Tony Stark."

It's understandable that a comic creator would want to wax enthusiastic about the screen prospects of a character her or she helped bring into the world. But while Jessica Jones and her relationship with Luke Cage are certainly Marvel characters, the approach in Aliasalways felt more like a creator owned independent title. Something tells me that Mr. Bendis wouldn't be quite this effusive if he didn't genuinely feel they got this world right.

Jessica Jones will hit Netflix in late 2015 or early 2016.
