The X-Men TV series is very real, but requires some negotiations with Marvel before it can happen. Details here...
NewsUPDATE!
The X-Men TV series is still inching toward reality. The latest installment of the Television Critics Association press tour is once again our source of primary info on this, and while it sounds like things are still tricky, they're working on it.
"We're in negotiations with Marvel," Fox Television Group CEO Dana Walden told THR. "We're hopeful we'll be able to announce something soon. We're not closed on a deal yet but it's something we're definitely pursuing."
Given the lukewarm reaction to the new Fantastic Four movie, perhaps the return of those movie rights to Marvel could be thrown in as part of the deal to let Fox produce this X-Men TV series? We can dream, right?
Our original story from January follows...
Long whispered about, 20th Century Fox are indeed developing a live-action X-Men TV series for FOX. It's in the early planning stages, but this is the first official word we've heard on the subject in some time. The news came out of the seemingly never ending Television Critics Association press tour, where Fox Entertainment chairs Gary Newman and Dana Walden, spoke with reporters about the show's status.
"It's in negotiations," said Newman. "We're cautiously optimistic, we had a good meeting with them. That will not be on a fast track creatively. This is just the deal, now we have to find the creative."
As for who might be involved, we have 24executive producers Evan Katz and Many Coto would be teaming with JD Payne and Patrick McKay (currently working on a new Flash Gordon movie, and who did some work on an earlier draft of Star Trek Beyond). While 20th Century Fox has a firm handle on the X-Men film franchise, a TV show would require some negotiations with Marvel, which may prove tricky, especially considering Marvel's increased presence on ABC and Netflix, with as many as six shows airing or in development. And those are just the ones we know about!
Don't expect to see an X-Men TV series, if it happens at all, before the 2016-2017 season. But perhaps with the "First Class Trilogy" about to wrap up in 2016 with X-Men: Apocalypse, the next logical step for Xavier's School For Gifted Youngsters is the small screen. The X-Men universe is certainly large enough to include a range of different potential shows.
