British actor signs up for French director’s sci-fi epic
NewsClive Owen has joined the cast of Valerian, the new science fiction extravaganza being cooked up by French filmmaker/madman Luc Besson (Lucy). The director announced the news over Twitter.
Owen will play a character named Arun Filitt in the film, which is based on a landmark comic book series by writer Pierre Christin and artist Jean-Claude Mézières. The book, which ran from 1967 to 2010 and is considered one of the most influential European comics ever created, follows the title character, a member of an elite corps of agents from the 28th century who are able to travel through all of space and time as required to protect and maintain their civilization.
Owen, who returns to Cinemax this fall in season 2 of The Knick, will be acting alongside Dane DeHaan (The Amazing Spider-Man 2) and Cara Delevigne (Suicide Squad) in the $180 million film, which marks Besson’s first foray into this kind of massive sci-fi saga since 1997’s beloved The Fifth Element. There’s no word yet on when production is slated to begin, but this one sounds like a blast -- in all senses of the word.
