The Guardians and Doctor Who favorite is cast alongside Tom Hanks in The Circle.
NewsKaren Gillan has joined the cast of The Circle, the cyber satire from director James Ponsoldt (The End of the Tour) that also stars Tom Hanks, Emma Watson and John Boyega (Star Wars: The Force Awakens) and is based on the novel by Dave Eggers.
According to Deadline, Gillan will play Annie, “a warm, cute, goofy, old-money confident and fiercely intelligent member of The Circle.” Gillan is best known as Amy Pond from Doctor Who and Nebula in Guardians of the Galaxy, while she’s also been recently seen in the horror film Oculus and the short-lived TV series Selfie.
What is The Circle? In Eggers’ novel, it’s the world’s most powerful Internet company -- essentially a dark yet tongue-in-cheek version of Google or Apple -- that links users’ personal emails, social media, banking, and purchasing with its universal operating system, resulting in one online identity and “a new age of civility and transparency.”
Since the likes of the above companies have brought neither civility nor transparency to modern life -- more like a complete loss of privacy and overreliance on computers -- it doesn’t sound like The Circle will come around to anywhere good. The movie arrives sometime in 2016.
