Andrew Garfield on the ending of The Amazing Spider-Man 2 and the sexuality of Spider-Man.

News

As he continues promoting his new movie 99 Homes, Andrew Garfield has been chatting about his time as Spider-Man again, and especially the controversial The Amazing Spider-Man 2.

Garfield revealed that the ending of the film -- in which Spider-Man steps in to take over from a little boy in a Spider-costume who bravely stands up to the Rhino -- was in part down to him. "That was one of my favorite parts of the film, and it was my idea", he told MTV.

"I felt the film was missing me as a seven year old," he added. "All of us as a seven year old, being inspired, and given the strength to be who we are, we can step into fear and be courageous in our own lives. I feel a little bit egotistical mentioning it was my idea. But it’s one of the things I’m really proud of."

Garfield than addressed the issue of Peter Parker/Spider-Man's sexuality, which came up recently when it was leaked that Sony was insistent Parker was "Caucasian and heterosexual." Garfield, though, couldn't care less about Spider-Man's sexual preferences.

"I'm excited to get to the point where we don't have to have this conversation," he told Mic. "Where we can have a pansexual Spider-Man".

"The richness of the world we're in, the diversity of the world we're in; you look at the animal kingdom and you see it reflected. You look all over," he continued. "What are we so scared of? Why are we so 'no, it has to be this way, a man and a woman.' Why is that even a conversation?"

"The beauty about Spider-Man, for me, is that he's covered head to toe," he added. "That's why everyone thinks it could be them in that suit. You don't see skin color. You don't see sexual orientation. You don't see how old the person is, gender, the whole thing. I celebrate that. Anyone can be a hero in their own lives."

Spider-Man will return to our screens next year in Captain America: Civil War, with Tom Holland the latest actor to take on the role.
