Drew Goddard on his abandoned Sinister Six movie: "I was making everyone the protagonist"

News

Had Sony's Spider-Man movie universe come together, then by now we could have seen at least a trailer for Drew Goddard's planned film Sinister SixGoddard elected not to direct The Martianso he could make the Spider-Man spin-off, which was widely teased in The Amazing Spider-Man 2. Yet following the box office performance of that film, and Sony's subsequent deal with Marvel Studios over the screen future of the webslinger, the Sinister Sixproject fell by the wayside.

Speaking with IGN, Goddard talked about the film falling through, saying that the making of the movie "is the special part.""After that it’s the business part. Like, I want people to see these things, but it’s done. And with Sinister, you know I love that script, it was really fun. I love the artist I was working with. I’d love to make that movie someday. But if we don’t? I still got to write it. I still got to do it. And you can’t take that away from me, man."

Reaffirming that Sinister Six would have stood on its own away from The Amazing Spider-Man films -- "I get tired of these movies where they're becoming too much of a puzzle for people to solve" -- Goddard also expanded on his approach to the movie.

"When you’re doing just a straightforward superhero movie, you don’t need a lot of villains. The focus is on one guy. I think with Sinister, it’s different. To me it's less about too many villains and more about too many antagonists and there’s a distinction," he said.

"You never say, like,The Dirty Dozenhas too many characters. They’re all villains, or you could argue that. But they’re protagonists. The trick withSinister, is that I was making everyone the protagonist and less about six-on-one and more about coming at it a little differently. That was the idea."

Sadly, barring some remarkable turnaround in Sony's Spider-Man universe plans, the Sinister Sixjoins the list of intriguing comic book films that will never see the light of day...
