Mad Max: Fury Road director George Miller denies rumors of working on Man of Steel 2. He does confirm movement about more Mad Max, though.

Despite recent waffling about whether Zack Snyder’s Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice is or is not a direct sequel to Man of Steel (we tend to vote “not” since Snyder has confirmed the Dark Knight is the focus), fans have remained hopeful that Superman would get a solo movie again. So when rumors broke in August that Warner Bros. had approached Mad Max: Fury Road director George Miller to handle Man of Steel 2, DC fans dared to dream of that Man of Tomorrow.

They can ground those expectations. Miller confirmed this week that even if there has been talk about a Man of Steel 2 offer, those discussions have been minimal. And they apparently didn’t get very far.

While speaking with Digital Spy, Miller revealed rather than working on another Mad Max movie, a Furiosa spin-off, or a new installment of Big Boy Blue, Miller has opted for none of the above at the time being.

According to Miller, he wants his next movie to be “very small” and “without any special effects, and not many stunts.”

When further pressed about what this means for the validity of Man of Steel 2 rumors, Miller elaborated, “There’s been some of that in the mix, but I’d say [it’s] probably not true. I was going to do a Justice League movie that fell through in 2009. [It was] not a fault of anybody involved except the new Australian government wasn’t agile enough with their rebates and were indecisive, and there was a writers strike. The planets didn’t align for that one.”

While Miller did express he still has an interest in the DC mythology and its pantheon of history, it sounds like he is closing the door on doing a superhero movie in the immediate future, including Man of Steel 2.

Miller famously was involved in directing Justice League: Mortal, which would have starred among other actors Armie Hammer as Batman, Adam Brody as the Flash, Megan Gale as Wonder Woman, Common as Green Lantern, and Teresa Palmer as the villain Talia Al Ghul (who Marion Cotillard would go on to play as the surprise baddie in The Dark Knight Rises).

But for fans disappointed about no Superman movie from the eclectic director of the Mad Max films—as well as Babe and Happy Feet—be relieved to know that Miller is still very much toying about doing another Mad Max movie one day.

Speaking about how during the elongated process of developing Fury Road, Miller confirmed that while developing character backstories, he ended up creating two whole new screenplays set in that universe.

“And I’m happy to say that there’s conversations, there’s discussions, about them right now.”

We hope they speed up one day to be more than just that.
