Batman will lose Greg Capullo for a little while in 2016.
NewsOne interesting piece of news to come out of NYCC 2015 this weekend was the announcement that artist Greg Capullo would be taking a "short break" from Batman, which he has been drawing since the New 52 relaunch in 2011.
DC co-publisher Dan DiDio and Scott Snyder, who writes Batman, were both adamant that this would only be a short break. Capullo's last issue will be #51. The issue will arrive in early 2016. Right now, Snyder and Capullo are halfway through their latest arc, "Superheavy," which sees the arrival of a new Batman in Gotham City. It's really quite good, if you haven't started reading it yet.
Why is Capullo taking a break from the book? Well, it's because he has a new project lined up with writer Mark Miller (Kick-Ass, Chrononauts). No details on that yet.
I had a chance to sit down with Snyder and Capullo over the weekend to talk about Batman. When I asked Snyder if he had a planned shortlist of artists to fill in for Capullo after #51, he declined to comment. Capullo also declined to comment on the title of his new project with Millar.
What plans does Snyder have for the book after "Superheavy" wraps up? One thing he teased during his DC Spotlight panel at the convention was a Two-Face story. He'd like to show readers why the villain is truly scary. Snyder also admitted he has at least one more Joker story in him.
During a Q&A session in the Bat-Universe panel, Snyder teased that 2016 would be big year for Robin in the main Batman book. He did not go into detail on whether he meant Damian Wayne, the current Robin, or a past Robin. Or the plethora of kids currently representing Robin in the We Are Robin book. There are a lot of Robins running around right now, aren't there? Snyder has said in the past that he doesn't like writing Damian because it hits too close to home for him, as his own son is Damian's age.
More on this as we learn it!
