Syfy is teaming with Man of Steel writer David Goyer for a new TV series about Superman's grandfather....Krypton.

UPDATED!

Things have been pretty quiet on the KryptonTV series front since it was first announced last year. But with Da Vinci's Demons season 4 about to premiere, Mr. Goyer is getting chatty about his next TV project.

"It takes place 200 years before Man of Steel," Mr. Goyer told ComicBook.com at a press junket. Whether he means it's actually intended as a prequel to the film version of Krypton remains to be seen. Warner Bros. has so far been cagey about crossing over their film and TV universes. It sounds possible, though, as Mr. Goyer also said they had "only scratched the surface" in the first act of Man of Steel.

Our original story from December 2014 follows...

Before Batman…there was GOTHAM. It’s a potent tagline and one that’s done very well for Fox this fall with the biggest new network drama of the season. So now, before Superman there’s….Krypton. Yep, Superman’s home world is getting a TV show from David Goyer and Syfy.

Syfy is teaming with Warner Horizon Television for a one-hour drama about the House of El a generation before Kal-El was even a twinkle in Jor’s eye. As this is from the man who had a hand at the story stages in The Dark Knight Trilogy, and who more crucially penned the screenplay for Man of Steel, it is unsurprisingly dark days indeed for the El paterfamilias. The press release includes the following synopsis:

Years before the Superman became a superhero, the House of El was shamed and ostracized. This series follows The Man of Steel’s grandfather as he brings hope and equality to Krypton, turning a planet in disarray into one worthy of giving birth to the greatest Super Hero ever known. The planet was created by Jerry Siegel and Joe Shuster and fist featured in a 1938 DC comic.

David Goyer, whose TV credits also include Da Vinci’s Demons and Constantine, is developing the series as executive producer. Ian Goldberg (Once Upon a Time) is writing the pilot on a story he conceived with Goyer.

If it’s anything like Man of Steel, I’m sure it’ll have plenty of snap.
