An exhibit dedicated to Jack Kirby's depictions of heroic combat has opened in New York City.
NewsIf you're in New York City and you're looking for something cool and comic book related to do for the next few weeks, swing by 103 Allen St on the Lower East Side. The Jack Kirby Museum and Research Center has opened a new pop-up exhibit, called Comics Combatives: Stories Told by Jack Kirby Pfc.
It will run from November 11th through November 29th.
Den of Geek and the Jack Kirby Museum will do periodic live look-ins from the Museum, and will livestream all events. These Periscope widgets will light up when we're live!
Comics Combatives will feature art and pages spanning the career of Jack Kirby, arguably the single most important comic book creator of the 20th Century. Comics Combatives focuses on Kirby’s dynamic, fluid depictions of war, action, and hand-to-hand combat, and will include samples from titles like CaptainAmerica, Thor, Foxhole, Kamandi, The New Gods, and more.
“Nobody drew combat like Jack Kirby,” says Kirby Museum director and founder, Randolph Hoppe in a statement, “he was able to combine the best attributes of classic adventure comic strip artists with his upbringing in tough NYC neighborhoods as well as the action he saw in World War II and bring it to the new long cartoon form known as comic books.”
The first Kirby Museum pop-up exhibit, Prototype: Alpha, drew capacity crowds to its small space during its six day run.
“Jack Kirby’s profile has been growing in recent years, more than twenty years after his death in 1994,” Hoppe says. “After the success of our previous pop-up in 2013, we couldn’t be more happy to be working with Eric Ho and miLES City to bring more Kirby to the neighborhood of his youth.”
The Kirby Museum will also host a series of events and lectures at 103 Allen including a special release party for the latest issue of The Jack Kirby Collector, featuring a talk by editor and TwoMorrows publisher John Morrow on November 14th, and Cap ‘n’ Jack: Jack Kirby and Captain America, a VisuaLecture by noted pop culture historian, Arlen Schumer (author of The Silver Age of Comic Book Art) on November 15th.
Additional special events will be announced on The Kirby Museum’s website, KirbyMuseum.org.
Comics Combatives: Stories Told by Jack Kirby Pfc. will be open Tuesday through Sunday, starting Wednesday, November 11th and ending Sunday, November 29th (closed on Thanksgiving Day), from noon to 7 pm.
Regular admission is a suggested donation of $10 for the general public, $5 for seniors and students, and free for Kirby Museum members and members of the military.
Special events and lectures are priced individually.
