DC Comics will explore the future of their universe with a weekly series launching on Free Comic Book Day 2014 - The New 52: Futures End

DC Comics is no stranger to weekly event mini-series. Some, like the 2006-2007 52, defy expectations. Others, like Countdown, are best forgotten. But launching on Free Comic Book Day 2014, DC is shaking things up with another new weekly series: The New 52: Futures End, written by Jeff Lemire, Dan Jurgens, Keith Giffen, and Brian Azzarello. Ethan Van Sciver is drawing the zero issue (with a cool Ryan Sook cover), while other artists will include Jesus Merino, Aaron Lopresti, and Dan Jurgens. The New 52: Futures End kicks off with a zero issue that will land in stores on Free Comic Book Day, and weekly installments will follow over the course of the next year.

"Really, what we're trying to do with this book is to explore the nature of what a hero is and we're doing that, obviously by playing with the future of the New 52 timeline," Leff Lemire told the AP, "Past present and future all colliding in this story line. That means exploring the past with a character like Frankenstein, the present with Firestorm and the future with Batman Beyond who is, Lemire said, making what is his first "in-continuity appearance. He'll become part of the New 52." Lemire also promises that new concepts and characters will be introduced over the course of the story, as well.

The cover for The New 52: Futures End by Ryan Sook certainly puts Batman Beyond front and center, but it also showcases what appears to be OMAC technology and Brother Eye. And while the OMAC concept has little to do with what Jack Kirby created these days, the last time it was deployed in "event" fashion, there were far-reaching, continuity-altering consequences for the DC Universe. We wouldn't sleep on this one, folks! The New 52: Futures End #0 hits stores on May 3rd, 2014.
