Chris tells us about Francesco Francavilla's fascinating new -- or is that old? -- re-imagining of the Dark Knight.
What the hell is wrong with the folks at DC Comics? Okay, I realize that question will take hours to answer, so let me clarify things a bit: Why haven’t they commissioned Francesco Francavilla to create the wondrous Batman 1972 comic that he has envisioned?
The popular Afterlife with Archie and Black Beetle artist (who was also recently voted one of the 101 Comic Talents to Watch in 2014 by Den of Geek) originally envisioned his gritty take on Gotham City last year. With many writers agreeing that the lack of a real Batman 1972 comic was one of 2013’s biggest missed opportunities, Francavilla returned to his blog over the weekend to unleash more Serpico-esque concept art.
This time around, readers are treated to a glimpse of what appears to be a Dean Martin-inspired Two Face, a grindhousey new Bat-logo, a Gotham City police car, and a smoking, turtlenecked Batman overlooking the city he loves.
So who would write such an opus? I think Duane Swierczynski would be a great choice. His mastery of crime/comics writing would be the perfect match for Francavilla’s bleak nostalgia. Hmm...
Dan Didio, here’s another chance to make it happen. Don’t screw it up again.
