Chris Roberson and Mike Allred's offbeat zombie story is coming to CW from Veronica Mars showrunners.
iZombie, the offbeat Vertigo series created by Chris Roberson and Michael Allred is coming to the CW, courtesy of Rob Thomas and Diane Ruggiero. Deadline describes CW's iZombie as "a supernatural crime procedural that centers on a med student-turned-zombie who takes a job in the coroner’s office to gain access to the brains she must reluctantly eat to maintain her humanity, but with each brain she consumes, she inherits the corpse's memories. With the help of her medical examiner boss and a police detective, she solves homicide cases in order to quiet the disturbing voices in her head."
This isn't quite the iZombie that comic fans are familiar with, and describing it as a "supernatural crime procedural" doesn't quite line up. But we suppose if that's what it takes to get the show on the air, so be it. With any luck, the iZombie television show won't shy away from the quirkier aspects of the comic that Roberson and Allred introduced, like her ghostly best friend, a mod girl from the sixties, or Scott the "were-terrier."
However, the presence of Veronica Mars creator Rob Thomas, and Diane Ruggiero (who co-wrote the upcoming Veronica Mars movie) should help ease some fears. Even with zombies at peak (some might say past peak) popularity, this one does sound like a bit of a tricky sell. But the CW is confident enough in iZombie to greenlight a pilot, so it looks like we may see it in fall of 2014.
