Though still absent a greenlight, Game of Thrones' seventh season seems secured with the cast renegotiating their contracts.
For those wondering how many seasons Game of Thrones may actually go—well, it looks like HBO just shook the foundations of the Wall to ensure the seventh season.
While HBO has only greenlit next year’s fifth season and a following season six for 2016, it is no surprise that they would want a seventh season for their flagship series. Indeed, creators and executive producers David Benioff and D.B. Weiss have confirmed as much in the past about desiring a seventh season, albeit with some reluctance toward doing an eighth year. But today marks the completion of an extensive contract renegotiation with the “principal actors,” including (amongst many others) Peter Dinklage, Emilia Clarke, Lena Headey, and more, for a seventh season.
This additional season to their contracts, which previously was for six years, includes substantial pay raises to their salaries for seasons five and six, according to The Hollywood Reporter.
Intriguingly the series’ negotiation tactics also includes a tiered system due to the sprawling nature of the series’ ensemble cast. The “A-tier” would include the aforementioned Dinklage, Clarke, Headey, and Kit Harington and Nikolaj Coster-Waldau. The “B-tier” would then consist of cast members like Natalie Dormer, Maisie Williams, and Sophie Turner. There is another tier as well for regulars who will see an increase, though perhaps not as substantial as the aforementioned cast members.
