The writer of DC Comics' Catwoman ongoing series has confirmed that Selina Kyle is bisexual.
NewsWith one same sex kiss in the pages of Catwoman#39, the word is out: Selina Kyle is bisexual.
This surprises virtually nobody who is a fan of the character, but the beginning of a relationship with a supporting character "on panel" in this month makes it canon. While there has been a move towards more LGBT characters in comics, few boast a profile as high as Catwoman's.
"When I was first plotting out what I expected to be a six-issue arc,"Catwomanwriter Genevieve Valentine wrote on her blog, "there were a few emotional beats I considered indispensable...one was establishing Selina as canon bisexual."
As for the matter of Selina's most famous relationship, she had this to say:
"While I don’t want to spoil what can’t yet be spoiled, please be assured that Selina’s longstanding connection to Batman has not been forgotten; that is not how bisexuality (or humanity) works. Selina doesn’t care easily, but when she does care it strikes deep, and there will be plenty of that coming up."
Ms. Valentine took over as writer on Catwomanwith issue #35, during a general shakeup of the Batman titles that also got us such "new look" (and critically acclaimed) titles like Batgirland Gotham Academy.
