CBS' Supergirl has cast Brit Morgan to play the electrifying Superman villain, Livewire.
NewsWhile Supergirl fans may already be somewhat mourning the fact that Kara Zor-El will likely never crossover with the other Greg Berlanti-produced superhero series on CW, they shouldn’t get too down. In fact, as the series continues forward, its focus on the future is electrifying.
Consider today’s news for example that the CBS superhero series has just cast Brit Morgan as the well-known Superman villain, Livewire. Yep, the Superman: The Animated Series creation is getting the live-action treatment (Smallville doesn’t count), and she’s set to surely create quite the shock for Melissa Benoist’s Supergirl.
As revealed via Variety, Livewire will maintain her comic book origin of being a confident and abrasive shock-jock who now works at “CatCo Media” before an accident turns her into an electrical super-villain. Morgan also has had experience in the past of playing the biting villain, as seen in True Blood where she played the recurring character of Debbie, a werewolf with a bad vampire-blood addiction habit.
Livewire was created by Bruce Timm in the Superman animated series in 1997 (she appeared first, however, in that cartoon's comic book spin-off, Superman Adventures earlier that year). But she did make her canonical DC Comics debut when Gail Simone and John Byrne transferred her over in Action Comics #835 as a Superman villain in 2006. While she has mostly remained in Kal-El’s rogue’s gallery, she has also since fought Supergirl, the Flash, and Batgirl. She also has had a brief stint of being a good guy (who doesn’t these days?).
Supergirl is being executive produced by Greg Berlanti (Arrow, The Flash) and Ali Adler (Chuck), and stars Melissa Benoist as the latest caped crime fighter in the Berlanti TV universe, which also includes Arrow and The Flash.
Supergirl is also set to star Laura Benanti, Mehcad Brooks, Calista Flockhart, Chyler Leigh, Jeremy Jordan, Dean Cain, and Helen Slater.
Kara “Supergirl” Danvers is described in the series as having, at age 12, been sent from her dying home planet of Krypton to Earth, where she was taken in by the Danvers, a foster family who taught her to be careful with her extraordinary powers. After repressing said skills for more than a decade, Kara is forced to bust out her super moves in public during an unexpected disaster. Energized by her heroism for the first time in her life, she begins embracing her abilities in the name of helping the people of her city, earning herself a super moniker along the way.
Supergirl was created by Otto Binder and Al Plastino in 1959 to be a female counterpart to her more famous relative.
