Maisie Williams, aka Arya Stark, has been cast as the lead protagonist in "The Forest of Hands and Teeth."
NewsZombies are coming for Maisie Williams. No, not those zombies. Different zombies. Specifically, the unconsecrated cannibal characters that make up the ominous external threat in bestselling young adult novel The Forest of Hands and Teeth. According to Variety, the 18-year-old British actress who plays Arya Stark in Game of Thrones is in negotiations to be cast as the main protagonist Mary in the film adaptation of the first book in the Carrie Ryan trilogy from Hetherwood Productions.
So, what's the deal with this latest addition to the long line of book-to-film young YA adaptations? Well, Mary is a teen living in a dystopian, fenced-off forest village in the sometime-future. Of course. The zombies are what remains of most of the human race, who were turned into their current, flesh-eating selves after a plague struck humanity. You'd think that this would make Mary's status of one of the band of plague survivors a lucky one. Not so much. Her society has its own plagues of oppression and secret-keeping. And Mary is soon put in a position of leading a group through the dangers of the Forest of Hands and Teeth. Good luck, Arya!
The Forest of Hands and Teeth will be directed and written by Kate Maberly, whose short film, Charlie's Supersonic Glider, will premiere at the Hollywood Film Festival this week. Prior to her turn to directing, Maberly starred in the 1993 adaptation of The Secret Garden, in which she herself played the main character Mary. The cycle continues!
Filming on The Forest of Hands and Teeth is scheduled to start sometime in the new year.
