Drew Goddard won't rule out the possibility of that Spider-Man and Sinister Six movie down the road.

News

Of all the scuttled plans Sony had for Spider-Man, Drew Goddard's Sinister Six movie was by far the most interesting. There had been some confusion as to whether this would function as a sequel (or sidequel...are people still trying to make that word happen?) or soft reboot for The Amazing Spider-Man franchise, but according to Drew Goddard, it would have worked entirely on its own.

Which means it still could, if it came to it, even though Spidey's fortunes have changed dramatically now that Marvel Studios is steering his cinematic destiny with Sony riding shotgun.

For one thing, this was definitely a Spider-Man movie, and not something where Spidey would play second fiddle to a team of villains. "It was the giant, epic Spider-Man movie of my dreams,” Mr. Goddard told io9. He compared it to the standalone adventures of Marvel Comics annuals, oversized single issues that told standalone stories not tied to the usual creative team's monthly adventures that wrapped up in 48 or 64 pages.

That's pretty cool, but it's not even the best part. "It was important to me to make a movie that could stand on its own. So the good news is, you know, [laughs], it slots in very well to any plan anybody ever wants. We just need to let a couple years go by, I think.”

Considering that Sony still has a stake in the Spider-Man franchise despite Marvel taking center stage in the webslinger's life at the moment, this might just be the way they get to play in the sandbox again. And despite the rather uninspiring Amazing Spider-Manfranchise, Drew Goddard is the kind of creator who should make Spidey fans feel good. Maybe we'll get to see Sinister Sixone day, after all.
